I listen to this music and my mind wanders to different places. I think about this island of Ibiza - a small Mediterranean outpost that has inspired so much music. Certain places have a history that allows things to happen in ways outside the norm. Ibiza is one of those.
From very early on, 650 odd years before Christ roughly speaking, the Carthaginians discovered Ibiza and founded Ibiza Town. They named the island after their God of dancing, Bes. Many people and cultures used the island to house those that didn’t fit in, offering a home to refugees through time. This mix of people and nationalities, with a large dose of alternative culture, explains the foundations of the hippy ethos that gave birth to the Ibiza we know and love.
The hippy music of the '70s gave way to Balearic Beat, which in it's truest form has an anything goes ethos. The phrase 'as long as it fits' comes to mind. A hard industrial beat sitting next an alternative, disco or house record. The new scene of recent times is the melodic and eclectic sound that many of us enjoy. It is a broad sound, where genres rub shoulders with the ‘Sketches…’ releases embodying the best of this scene.
The music within this album takes us back in time to a place where the music happened to fit the scenery. A classic mix of live instrumentation and synthesised sound. The fact that this album was made on the island of Ibiza seems of small note considering how well the records fit this world. The point of this music was always it could come from anywhere. This music comes from the heart. It’s life music.
